Gatsby Benchmarks

What are the Gatsby Benchmarks?

In 2013, Sir John Holman led a major research project to identify practical actions that could significantly improve careers guidance in England. This work resulted in the creation of the Gatsby Benchmarks, a set of eight evidence‑based standards that define what high‑quality careers education looks like. As the Gatsby Foundation notes, these benchmarks provide a clear framework for world‑class careers guidance and are now embedded in government statutory guidance for secondary schools and colleges in England.

Sir John Holman stated:

“Every young person needs high-quality career guidance to make informed decisions about their future.”

The eight Gatsby Benchmarks set out what schools should deliver for all students, from providing a stable careers programme to ensuring personal guidance, employer encounters, and meaningful experiences of workplaces. They are widely recognised as the national standard for good careers provision.

At Matravers School, we are committed to delivering high‑quality careers education that prepares every learner for future success. Our careers programme is designed to fully align with the eight Gatsby Benchmarks, and we continuously evaluate and strengthen our provision to ensure it meets these standards.

The table below provides a self‑evaluation of our progress against the Gatsby Benchmarks, informed by the Compass Careers Benchmark Tool, and reflects both the activities already completed this academic year and the planned provision for 2025–2026.
