Strategy

Careers education at Matravers School is progressive from Year 7 to Year 13. It combines careers learning, labour market information, employer and provider encounters, workplace experiences, personal guidance and support for pupils’ next steps.

The programme enables pupils to:

  • recognise their strengths, interests, values and employability skills;
  • challenge stereotypes and understand barriers within education and employment;
  • explore local, regional and national employment opportunities;
  • understand academic, technical and vocational routes;
  • connect subjects and qualifications to future opportunities;
  • meet employers, employees, colleges, universities and training providers;
  • experience workplaces and practise workplace skills;
  • prepare for applications, interviews and transition;
  • make informed and impartial decisions about their next steps.

Our Careers Learning Journey

Our Careers Learning Journey shows how pupils’ knowledge, skills and experiences develop from Year 7 to Year 13.

The journey is cumulative. Pupils return to important concepts such as personal strengths, workplace skills, labour market information, pathways, applications and decision-making with increasing depth and independence.

Alongside taught careers learning, pupils take part in experiences such as:

  • careers fairs;
  • employer talks and workshops;
  • education and training provider encounters;
  • mock interviews;
  • workplace experiences;
  • university and college visits;
  • apprenticeship activities;
  • personal careers guidance;
  • application and transition support.

Pupils are supported to prepare for these experiences and to reflect afterwards on what they have learned and what action they will take.
